Alibaba plans to bring AI into merchants’ internal workflows across Taobao and Tmall in 2027, extending its use beyond existing tools for product launches, advertising and customer service, Tmall president Liu Bo said at a 15 October briefing, the South China Morning Post reported.

An e-commerce version of Qwen Work, Alibaba’s enterprise AI assistant, began testing earlier in October for merchants selling across multiple platforms. Alibaba is also introducing AI tokens as a product category on Taobao and Tmall, with Z.ai and MiniMax among its partners for selling computing power to users.

Liu said young, active users buy from an average of 15 product categories a year across the platforms. He said Alibaba aims to raise that to between 25 and 30 categories by using AI to connect shoppers with more products.

Tmall expects a record one million global brands and more than 70 million products in its 2026 Singles’ Day festival, KrASIA reported. Presales began on 15 October. Tmall’s main sale is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. China time on 20 October.
