Google DeepMind and Google Cloud said on 14 October they would give up to 200 European scientific researchers direct access to frontier models and $3 million in compute credits, Reuters reported.
Key points
- The European Commission selected the researchers under its Resource for AI Science in Europe scheme.
- The offer combines model access with $3 million in compute credits.
- The scientific tools include AlphaFold 3, WeatherNext, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve and AlphaEarth Foundations.
European Commission selects RAISE researchers
The researchers were chosen by the European Commission through its Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE) scheme, The Economic Times reported. The publication described the group as 200 researchers, while Reuters reported that access would go to up to 200. Google’s access initiative aims to strengthen scientific research capabilities in Europe, The Economic Times reported.
Google DeepMind and Google Cloud are providing two parts of the offer: direct access to their models and credits for computing resources. The $3 million figure refers to compute credits for the researchers. Google Cloud is Alphabet’s cloud service, Reuters reported.
Google said the effort aimed to “accelerate the pace of European innovation and reinforce the continent’s scientific competitiveness” in a statement reported by The Economic Times. The company described the provision of computing power and scientific tools to research teams as the means to pursue that goal.
AlphaFold 3 and WeatherNext join the offer
The researchers’ access includes AlphaFold 3, WeatherNext, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve and AlphaEarth Foundations. The five named tools put Google’s scientific products alongside its frontier models in the offer to Commission-selected researchers.
AlphaFold 3 is used for protein research, while WeatherNext is used for meteorological forecasts, The Economic Times reported. Google DeepMind and Google Cloud said the access would help researchers work on challenges ranging from forecasting extreme weather patterns to mapping molecular structures, Reuters reported.
The companies presented those research tasks as intended uses for the access. The offer covers tools for work in different scientific fields, with AlphaFold 3 and WeatherNext among the products identified for researchers selected through RAISE.
Dublin statement and Brussels announcement
Google released its statement at an AI summit in Dublin, The Economic Times reported. Google DeepMind and Google Cloud made the announcement in Brussels, UA.News reported.
