Meta, Walmart, Stripe and Sierra are publishing an open standard for AI agents to interact with businesses on 6 October, CNBC reported. Called the personal agent protocol, it is intended to help businesses identify agents and see what they do on their websites, according to Bret Taylor, who leads the initiative. Taylor co-founded Sierra and is chairman of OpenAI.
Amazon has blocked Meta’s agents over website-scraping concerns. It also blocked Perplexity’s agent and sued the startup, alleging that Perplexity concealed its agents so they could continue scraping Amazon’s site without approval. Perplexity called the lawsuit a “bully tactic”.
David Singleton, head of Meta Superintelligence Labs, said the standard would give businesses more visibility and control when customers share payment and personal information with agents. Singleton said Meta’s Muse agent already has millions of US users. OpenAI and Anthropic are not part of the initiative, though Taylor said he expects them to participate.
