Synopsys is exploring partnerships with Chinese AI labs to develop chip design tools for China, following multi-year agreements with OpenAI and Amazon, Seeking Alpha reported on 8 October.
Key points
- Synopsys executive Ravi Subramanian described the China partnerships as an exploration.
- A separate report characterises a social media claim of collaboration with Chinese AI labs as unverified.
- The signed OpenAI agreement covers GPT-Synopsys, a model intended for semiconductor design workflows.
Subramanian describes a China-specific effort
Ravi Subramanian, Synopsys’ Chief Product Management Officer, told Nikkei Asia that the company was looking at work with Chinese AI labs on tools for that market. His account concerned potential partnerships. The company has already signed agreements with OpenAI and Amazon involving chip design technology.
Seeking Alpha linked the need for new AI-powered chip design tools to growing demand for model training and deployment. Subramanian also described China as a market with its own growth pattern: “We think China has its own dynamic for growth.”
Any expansion would have to comply with US government requirements, Subramanian told Nikkei Asia. “There are a set of U.S. government rules that we have to adhere to, and whatever we do, we will adhere to those in terms of expanding whatever we’re doing,” he said.
Global Sources described a social media claim about Synopsys working with Chinese AI labs as unverified.
Synopsys has expanded its Shanghai operations and continues to serve semiconductor customers in China. Those existing activities are separate from the proposed work with local AI labs. The distinction matters commercially: an established customer presence describes current operations, while the partnerships Subramanian discussed remain prospective.
OpenAI deal includes GPT-Synopsys and revenue sharing
The comparison for Synopsys’ China plans is its signed, multi-year agreement with OpenAI. AI Affairs previously reported that the companies signed an agreement to develop GPT-Synopsys. Seeking Alpha described the planned product as a specialised model designed to work with Synopsys electronic design automation, or EDA, tools in semiconductor design workflows.
The companies’ announcement describes joint research and development, licensing and revenue-sharing elements in the OpenAI arrangement, according to Global Sources. That gives the signed deal a commercial structure as well as a development project.
Early customer engagements under the OpenAI partnership had begun. Its account describes GPT-Synopsys as a model intended to work with the software engineers use to build and check chips, rather than as a general-purpose chatbot. The proposed applications include optimisation of power, performance and area, along with timing analysis and verification.
Those tasks involve different stages of design. Engineers weigh a chip’s speed, energy use and physical area, then check whether it operates as intended. The publication described AI agents as potential assistants within that work, with engineers retaining oversight of their recommendations.
Synopsys cites more than 50 tool collaborations
Synopsys already offers AI-focused tools called Autopilot and AgentEngineer. The company says the platforms have been involved in more than 50 collaboration projects. Synopsys says customers have reported faster completion of verification work and productivity gains, according to Global Sources.
