Anthropic’s Clark tells IMF and World Bank AI could lift US output

An internal Anthropic model puts potential US GDP at $44 trillion by 2030 under certain conditions. Clark also urged international rules and warned of job losses.

Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark told officials at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok on 17 October that one of the company’s internal models forecasts AI could raise US economic output by almost 50% by 2030 under certain conditions, Reuters reported. Clark put the model’s potential GDP figure at $44 trillion, against what he described as a current level of just over $30 trillion.

Clark, Anthropic’s head of public benefit, said the forecast assumed that AI would continue to improve and that an expansion of that size would require new industries and inventions. He called for international cooperation on “unusual and serious rules” for AI, saying policymakers had “a small number of years” to impose safeguards. Anthropic is preparing for an initial public offering expected in November that could value it at up to $2 trillion, Reuters reported.

Clark said AI was already causing job losses in fields with “high AI exposure”, including call centres and customer service. He said it was enhancing employment in scientific research, while the number of jobs it might create in new industries remained a major unknown.
