CGTN reported that People’s Bank of China governor Pan Gongsheng outlined a three-part AI strategy at the opening of the 2026 Financial Street Forum in Beijing on 19 October. The central bank plans to finance AI industry growth, introduce the technology cautiously into financial operations and track its effects on the economy and markets.
Pan said the timing of AI demand and supply could diverge, while the technology’s effects would vary across countries and sectors. Pan said investment in AI is among the chief drivers of rising share prices worldwide, with equity markets displaying heightened correlation and volatility. He also said AI could spur investment and raise inflation in the short run, while improving productivity and lowering inflation over the longer term.
Pan said the bank would increase and diversify financial support for core technological innovation and the government’s AI+ initiative. He described AI as already being used in Chinese finance to detect suspicious transactions, improve risk controls and advance financial inclusion. The bank would cautiously assess AI’s effects on the macroeconomy, financial markets and monetary policy, he said, and make policy preparations in advance.
