On 19 October, Quartz reported that the Department of Homeland Security had directed civilian federal agencies to clear DeepSeek products from their IT systems and barred federal procurement of the company’s technology. The Secretary of Homeland Security acted under the Federal Acquisition Supply Chain Security Act of 2018, having reviewed a Federal Acquisition Security Council recommendation and supporting material.

The procurement exclusion covers information technology products and services developed by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd and affiliated entities as defined in federal acquisition regulations. Agencies must remove products from DeepSeek and its affiliates, as well as third-party products and services developed using DeepSeek implementations.

DHS said the signed order was available on the Regulations.gov website under docket number DHS-2026-0628, Quartz reported. Questions about the order go to the FASCSA Order Implementation Team in the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Cybersecurity Division. The Federal Register is scheduled to publish the notice on 20 October.
