The European Commission is holding a special meeting of its Scientific Panel on artificial intelligence on 9 October, the Commission said in a press release. The meeting concerns frontier AI safety and security risks.

The panel has been investigating recent loss-of-control incidents. It has worked with the Commission’s AI Office on questions for the companies that developed the models involved. Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, is due to attend. Virkkunen said the EU has a law addressing systemic risk from AI and called for scientific input and enforcement as capabilities advance.

Its 60 independent members advise the EU AI Office and national authorities on evaluation methodologies, model classification, systemic risks and cross-border market surveillance. The Scientific Panel will present recommendations to the Commission on 9 October concerning frontier AI safety and security risks.
