US banking regulators question lenders on AI agents and foreign models

The inquiries reach banks of different sizes through written and verbal requests and examine how autonomous cybersecurity tools are authorised, monitored and disabled.

Arise TV reported on 13 October that the Federal Reserve, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation are questioning US banks about AI agents used in cybersecurity and Chinese-developed models. The regulators are using written and verbal requests with large, medium-sized and smaller lenders.

The questions cover how banks use agents to identify, assess and respond to cyber threats. Regulators also want to know who authorises the agents’ activities, how banks restrict and monitor them, and whether their decisions can be traced and audited. They are examining human oversight of critical decisions and banks’ ability to disable autonomous tools quickly.

The three regulators declined to comment, Arise TV reported. According to people familiar with the inquiries, the regulators are still collecting information and have not issued specific instructions to banks on how to respond.
