Anthropic agrees to pay $3.4 billion for gas-fired generators

Anthropic PBC agreed in late September to pay $3.4 billion for commitments covering 1.7 gigawatts of gas-fired generators for data centres, Bloomberg reported on 8 November, citing the Financial Times. The equipment comes from OnePWR Solutions, a supplier based in San Antonio.

Anthropic had initially planned to buy electricity from OnePWR but instead took over its existing Caterpillar generator orders. OnePWR placed those orders two years earlier and needed financing to complete the transaction, FourWeekMBA reported. The deal also covers engineering and construction capabilities to install the generators. Anthropic did not buy OnePWR, and no OnePWR employees transferred to the AI developer, according to the report.

The Financial Times described the transaction as the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI laboratory, Bloomberg reported. FourWeekMBA reported that xAI bought mobile gas turbines earlier in 2026 for $2 billion. Anthropic has disclosed nearly $900 billion in computing commitments through 2045, according to FourWeekMBA.
