GlobalFoundries said in its 9 October 2026 announcement that its €1.1 billion SPRINT expansion in Dresden had reached the topping-out stage and was on track to raise annual capacity above one million 300mm wafers by the end of 2028, from a current maximum of 950,000 wafers depending on product mix.
The company said the completed construction phase was on schedule and within budget. Exyte is the project’s general contractor. GlobalFoundries said the European Union, Germany’s federal government and the Free State of Saxony were supporting SPRINT under the European Chips Act framework.
GlobalFoundries also announced plans to develop and manufacture FDX Fusion in Dresden. The company says the fully depleted silicon-on-insulator platform targets 7nm-like digital performance alongside analogue, mixed-signal, embedded-memory and high-performance radio-frequency capabilities. It intends the technology for processing, sensing and real-time control in Physical AI applications.
GlobalFoundries employs around 3,000 people in Dresden and says it has invested more than €10 billion at the site since 2009. The company says the start of FDX Fusion development there depends on German federal approval of its project under the IPCEI Advanced Semiconductor Technologies programme.
