Salesforce agrees to buy Listen Labs to add AI customer research tools

The platform recruits research participants, conducts interviews and simulates customer responses. Salesforce expects the acquisition to close in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2027.

Salesforce signed a definitive agreement on 29 September to buy Listen Labs, after Cloud Wars reported talks to acquire the company for close to $2 billion on 22 September.

Key points

  • Salesforce says Listen Labs’ agents design studies, recruit participants, conduct interviews and bring together the findings.
  • Its agents can draw on more than 50 million participants and interview people in more than 120 languages, according to Salesforce.
  • The expected closing period is the fourth quarter of Salesforce’s fiscal year 2027, subject to customary conditions including regulatory clearance.

Salesforce plans a place for Listen Labs in its AI portfolio

Salesforce says the acquisition will extend its ability to understand customers and users alongside Marketing Cloud, Service Cloud and its wider AI portfolio. Listen Labs supplies agents intended to handle a research project from its initial questions through the collection and synthesis of feedback. The proposed addition puts customer research alongside products Salesforce already names as destinations for customer-facing work.

The company says Listen Labs can reduce the time needed to move from a research question to customer insights from months to days. Its description covers several steps: designing a study, finding people to take part, carrying out interviews and assembling the results. That is a broader task than collecting survey responses alone, and the promised time saving is Salesforce’s claim about the platform.

Aman Naimat, Salesforce’s President of AI Labs, said the purchase would make the research capabilities available through Salesforce to more organisations. He described customer and user feedback as a source of context for decisions. Alfred Wahlforss, Listen Labs’ CEO and Co-Founder, said AI lets a company conduct thousands of conversations at once and simulate potential customer reactions before it acts.

Listen Labs draws on more than 50 million participants

Salesforce says Listen Labs’ agents can recruit from a global network of more than 50 million participants. The company also says they can run interviews around the clock in more than 120 languages. Those figures describe the network and the platform’s interviewing capability, rather than the number of people interviewed for any particular study.

Listen Labs also offers digital twins that Salesforce describes as AI simulations grounded in real customer behaviour. The tools generate responses to proposed products, marketing messages and other ideas so that teams can compare approaches before further testing with customers or users. In Salesforce’s account, those simulated responses sit between an initial idea and the next round of research.

The platform’s agents also synthesise what they gather from interviews, according to Salesforce. The company says the resulting insights can inform decision-makers and provide context for agents. That connects the research work to its stated plan to add Listen Labs to its broader AI portfolio, rather than treating interviews as a separate survey product.

Cloud Wars named Microsoft among Listen Labs clients

Microsoft, Perplexity and Robinhood are among Listen Labs’ clients, Cloud Wars reported. The publication’s account of acquisition talks preceded the definitive agreement. Its reported figure of close to $2 billion referred to those talks.

Cloud Wars analyst Kieron Allen said adding Listen Labs’ customer research could give Agentforce agents more context when making decisions. He characterised that as a possible use of the technology, rather than an announced integration. Salesforce’s acquisition announcement names Marketing Cloud, Service Cloud and its broader AI portfolio as the businesses Listen Labs would complement.

Salesforce expects to complete the acquisition in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2027. The company says completion remains subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of the required regulatory clearance.
