Shopify Inc (TSX:SH., NYSE:SHOP) rose about 8% in early trading on Tuesday 22 September 2026 after Meta Platforms integrated its Muse AI agent with Shopify’s Shop Pay checkout system, Proactive Investors reported.

Key points

  • Shopify shares rose 7-8% on 22 September after Meta integrated Muse AI agent with Shop Pay checkout
  • Mark Zuckerberg confirmed partnership on X on 21 September; Tobi Lutke said it enables agentic checkout across all Shopify stores
  • Amazon has blocked Muse from its retail platform, contrasting with Shopify’s openness to AI shopping agents
  • Shopify Q2 2026 revenue grew 33% to $3.58 billion with 18% free cash flow margin; Q3 guidance points to low-30% growth
  • Stock now trades above 90X forward earnings versus Zacks Internet-Services industry average of 17X

Meta Muse partnership expands Shopify’s AI commerce reach

The agreement connects Meta’s consumer-facing AI technology with Shopify’s e-commerce and payment infrastructure. Muse can now browse Shopify-powered stores and complete purchases through Shop Pay, Shopify’s payments service. On Monday 21 September, Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced the partnership in a post on X, stating it would simplify shopping and checkout inside Muse. Shopify chief executive Tobi Lutke stated the deal would allow agentic checkout, letting an AI assistant finish purchases for shoppers, across every Shopify store.

Amazon has prevented Muse from operating on its marketplace, a stance that differs from Shopify’s choice to let the AI agent transact via Shop Pay. The difference between Amazon’s stance and Shopify’s willingness to embrace AI commerce has become a significant split in how retailers react to AI shopping tools. Meta launched Muse as its consumer AI agent before striking the Shopify integration.

Strong operating momentum precedes AI catalyst

Shopify’s operating momentum was already impressive before the Muse announcement. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue rose 33% year on year to $3.58 billion, free cash flow grew by more than half, and the free cash flow margin reached 18%, Yahoo Finance reported. Management forecasts third-quarter 2026 revenue growth in the low-30% range, with free cash flow margins between the high-teens and low-20%. The Zacks Consensus Estimate projects fiscal 2026 earnings per share of $1.89 and full-year revenue of $15.18 billion, implying increases above 61% and 31%. Furthermore, Shopify’s top and bottom lines are projected to increase by over 24% in fiscal 2027.

Valuation leaves less room for disappointment

The biggest argument against chasing the rally is valuation. Before the latest surge, Shopify was already trading at over 70 times forward earnings and is now at more than 90 times compared with its Zacks Internet-Services industry average of 17 times. Robust revenue gains, rising free cash flow, and Shopify’s expanding presence in AI commerce support a higher valuation, yet the elevated multiple offers little margin for error. Shopify holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), indicating investors might wait for a better buying point even given the firm’s favourable AI commerce outlook.
