Supabase raises $150 million and announces Turso acquisition

GIC led the round four months after a $500 million Series F. Supabase says AI agents and tools now create 70% of its new databases.

Supabase announced on 2 October that it had raised $150 million and was acquiring database platform Turso, four months after its $500 million Series F. GIC led the new round, the company said.

Key points

  • CapitalG, IronArc and SquarePeg also participated in the $150 million round, according to Supabase.
  • The company says it will use the round and acquisition to develop databases for AI agents, while the round will also provide employee liquidity.
  • Supabase says it adds more than 4 million databases a month, with agents or AI-driven tools creating 70% of new databases.

GIC leads the $150 million round

Alphabet’s CapitalG, IronArc and SquarePeg joined GIC in the financing, Supabase said. The company said the money would support further product development around databases created and used by agents. It also plans to provide liquidity to employees through the round.

The financing follows a $500 million Series F that Supabase said valued it at $10.5 billion after the investment. Supabase tied the timing of the new round to rising use of AI coding tools and agents on its platform.

Paul Copplestone, Supabase’s co-founder and chief executive, said connections through CapitalG to the wider Alphabet organisation would be valuable as the company grows. CapitalG general partner Derek Zanutto described Supabase as infrastructure for developers and agents building software.

Supabase, founded in 2020, offers an open-source Postgres development platform. Its products include databases, authentication, storage, edge functions, real-time subscriptions and vector search, the company said. It also describes a marketplace with more than 100 integrated partner tools.

Agents create 70% of new Supabase databases

Supabase says it is adding more than 1 million users and 4 million databases each month. Agents or AI-driven tools create 70% of those new databases, according to the company. Supabase also says more than 13 million developers use its platform to build and scale applications.

The company reported a 600% year-on-year rise in its number of databases in June. It said agents were already deploying most new databases on the platform at that point. Supabase attributes the increase to successive waves of AI software-building tools, including app builders and coding agents.

Supabase named Claude Code and Codex among the coding tools it says are broadening software development. The company wants developers and agents to use its platform for the backend services their applications need, a position Copplestone said Turso’s architecture would help it pursue.

Turso brings on-demand databases to Supabase

Supabase said Turso’s architecture can provision individual databases on demand for agents, both in the public cloud and in customers’ own cloud environments. The company is buying Turso to serve workloads that require large numbers of separate databases without provisioning a dedicated machine for each one.

Turso’s customers include Superhuman, Sauna.ai, CTO.new and Mastra, according to Supabase. The acquisition adds a different approach to database provisioning to Supabase’s Postgres-based development platform as the company seeks to handle the volume of databases its agents create.

Glauber Costa, Turso’s founder, will join Supabase as Head of Agentic Services alongside co-founder Pekka Enberg and the rest of Turso’s team, Supabase said. Costa said his goal since starting Turso had been to serve upwards of a billion databases to customers.

Supabase said Turso’s platform would remain in operation and have a path into the wider Supabase ecosystem.
