ByteDance is advertising forward-deployed AI engineering roles in China with potential annual pay of up to 975,000 yuan, the South China Morning Post reported on 25 October. The engineers work directly with customers to put AI applications into business operations, and Maimai data put the rise in Chinese job postings for the role at 1,523 per cent in the first seven months of 2026 against the same period in 2025.
Key points
- ByteDance postings offer 35,000 to 65,000 yuan a month, with 15 months of annual pay.
- Tencent, Alibaba Cloud and Ant Digital Technologies have advertised related engineering roles.
- A Beijing-based HR professional says the high salaries advertised for some jobs cover only a small part of the market.
ByteDance postings reach 975,000 yuan annually
ByteDance’s advertised positions in its AI business offer between 35,000 and 65,000 yuan a month, with 15 months of annual pay, according to listings on Chinese recruitment platform Boss Zhipin. The upper end puts potential yearly compensation at 975,000 yuan. That is an advertised ceiling, rather than a typical salary for the job.
Ant Digital Technologies, Ant Group’s technology arm, has listed business-facing forward-deployed engineering roles at 40,000 to 60,000 yuan a month on Boss Zhipin. Tencent-related positions have appeared at 30,000 to 60,000 yuan a month, while Alibaba Cloud deployment engineering listings have reached 50,000 yuan a month.
The pay is striking beside the 43,377 yuan average annual disposable income recorded in China for 2025. The postings are for engineers expected to work with customers on deployment, rather than for model research alone.
Maimai records a 1,523 per cent rise
Maimai, a Chinese professional networking platform, recorded forward-deployed engineering as the fastest-growing AI technical role covered by its figures, the South China Morning Post reported. Its measure counts job postings, rather than hires or salaries paid.
George Wang, a senior human resources professional at an AI company in Beijing, told the South China Morning Post that the high salaries advertised for some of these jobs account for only a small part of the market. He nevertheless described strong demand for developers able to build AI agents as companies reorganise their operations around the technology.
A Beijing-based engineer identified as Su, who previously led a forward-deployed team at a major Chinese internet company, described the work in practical terms. Su said employers seek people who can understand clients across different industries, choose appropriate AI tools and carry a solution through to implementation.
Tencent Cloud certification and ministry notice
Hiring is only one part of the effort. Tencent Cloud introduced a certification for forward-deployed engineers earlier in 2026, aimed at partner engineers and developers working with its Agent Development Platform. Tencent Cloud described it as the industry’s first certification for the role.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice in late August encouraging companies to put forward-deployed engineering teams at customer sites to help implement AI applications. It also called on universities to cultivate people for the work.
The push extends beyond China. Anthropic aims to train 10,000 forward-deployed engineers by the end of 2027 through a US$100 million initiative it announced in October.
