Musk says Grok Bot’s serving costs are unsustainable as users hit limits

His response to a request for a usage reset follows complaints from paying subscribers who say their weekly allowances are running out earlier than expected.

Elon Musk said on X on 1 November that the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to its revenue, Yeni Şafak reported. Paying subscribers say they are exhausting their weekly allowances early and losing access to the AI agent, The Independent reported.

Key points

  • Musk described Grok Bot’s serving costs as unsustainable relative to revenue.
  • His X reply followed a request to reset usage limits.
  • One subscriber said they had reached a weekly limit with four days left before it reset.

DogecoinNorway asks for a Grok Bot reset

Musk’s statement came in a reply to an X user called DogecoinNorway, who asked him to reset Grok Bot usage limits, India Today reported. The user said other subscribers were reporting that their allowances had run out quickly during the week.

The Independent reported a complaint from a subscriber who had reached the weekly maximum with four days remaining before the allowance reset. Grok Bot users receive an allocation of work, which their requests draw down. For someone who reaches the limit early, the restriction means losing access to an agent they pay to use until that allocation resets.

The request put a practical question to Musk: whether users could get more access. His answer instead addressed the cost of providing it.

Musk puts Grok Bot’s cost against revenue

“The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue,” Musk wrote on X. The wording matters for subscribers facing a limit: he tied the expense of running the service to what it earns, rather than announcing a reset or a change in allowances.

Musk declined to provide operating-cost or revenue figures and gave no indication that the current restrictions would change, Yeni Şafak reported. His statement describes a cost problem in relation to revenue; it does not put a number on either side of it.

Yeni Şafak identifies Grok Bot as an xAI service. The Independent attributes it to SpaceXSI, which the publication describes as encompassing SpaceX, AI work and the social network X.

Grok Bot’s August beta and paid tiers

Grok Bot launched in early beta in August as an agent that can carry out tasks across applications using its own virtual computer environment, according to Yeni Şafak. It can work through multiple steps and keep processing a request in the background without a user supervising each action.

The service is available through paid tiers under the SuperGrok and Cursor brands, with a usage allocation separate from other service allowances. That separation makes the Grok Bot limit its own constraint for subscribers, even when they have access to other paid features.

Grok Bot entered a market that also includes Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, The Independent reported. Musk has said the agent will use Claude, Midjourney and Suno, AI Affairs previously reported.
