Google adds file creation and editing inside Gemini chats

The new workspace supports PDFs on phones and a wider range of files on the web, with revisions made by typing or highlighting part of a file.

Google announced on 29 October 2026 that Gemini users can generate, preview and edit files inside the assistant’s chats, extending a workflow that had required users to leave the app to revise a generated file. The company says the capabilities are available to all Gemini users, with PDF editing on both web and mobile and other supported formats on the web.

Key points

  • Google says Gemini can create, preview and edit PDFs, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, text files and code within a chat.
  • Google lists PDFs as the only format with preview and editing support on mobile; the other formats are supported on the web.
  • Users can type changes into an expanded file or highlight a passage to request a change from Gemini.
  • Google says the capabilities are available to all users in the languages supported by the Gemini app.

Gemini moves file revisions into the chat

Gemini gained the ability to generate and download files earlier in 2026, but changing a generated file then meant leaving the app, The Verge reported. Google says files can be edited within Gemini chats: users can open them full-screen, type directly into them, or select text and ask the assistant to revise that part.

That selection matters because a request for a change can point to a particular piece of the file rather than describe its location in words. Google gives the example of highlighting a section and asking Gemini to change its text or visuals. The Verge describes a more specific request: selecting a table and asking the assistant to turn it into a graph.

Revising a study guide could therefore begin with an edit typed into the open file and continue with a highlighted passage that needs a different explanation. If the guide were a PDF, Google says those changes could be made in the Gemini app on either a phone or the web. For the other supported formats, its announcement places that editing workflow on the web.

The difference from Gemini’s existing Workspace integrations is where the work takes place. The assistant could already help edit files through Workspace apps, including the Gemini bar in Google Docs, The Verge reported. With this release, the conversation itself becomes the place to inspect a generated file and ask for another pass, without opening a separate editing app.

Google’s announcement covers manual changes as well as requests addressed to Gemini. A user can type into the full-screen view, highlight text to ask a question, or ask the assistant to refine the file. That combination leaves two ways to work on a draft in the same chat: changing what is on the page directly and describing the change wanted from the assistant.

Google limits mobile editing to PDFs

Google lists Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code among the formats supported on the web. Its announcement says PDF preview and editing work on both web and mobile, while preview and editing for the other listed formats work on the web only. That distinction affects which generated files can be revised without changing devices.

Thurrott reported that editing documents, PDFs, presentations and spreadsheets from a Gemini chat is available on both web and mobile. Google’s announcement places formats other than PDF on the web only. Thurrott also says Google Docs, Google Sheets, Markdown files, TXT files, slide decks and code can be edited only in the Gemini web app.

The format range takes Gemini beyond a place to draft prose. A spreadsheet or a slide deck can be generated and revised in the same conversation on the web, according to Google, while code and plain text files can also be opened there. The company’s mobile support is narrower: its announcement confines in-app file preview and editing on phones to PDFs.

Anthropic introduced a similar ability earlier in 2026, allowing Claude users to generate and edit documents and presentations inside chats, The Verge reported. Google’s release brings that kind of in-chat revision to Gemini while also naming spreadsheets, PDFs and code among its supported files. For builders working around either assistant, the editing surface is now part of the chat rather than necessarily a separate destination.

Handwritten notes become Gemini PDF study guides

Google offers a concrete example of the new workflow: uploading handwritten lecture notes and asking Gemini to turn them into a PDF study guide. According to the company, the resulting guide can be previewed in the chat, edited manually and revised by highlighting sections for changes to text or visuals. The user can then ask questions about the file in that same conversation.

The example joins file creation to the revision controls rather than ending at a downloadable draft. Handwritten notes supply the material, the generated PDF supplies a file that can be read, and the highlighted sections give subsequent requests a specific target. Google says this PDF workflow, like its other newly announced file capabilities, is available to all users in every language where the Gemini app is available.
