OpenAI announced ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace for files and documents, alongside its Dots AI assistants at Dev Day in San Francisco on 29 September 2026, TechCrunch reported. The launches put document editing and collaborative work inside ChatGPT, taking OpenAI further into the workplace software market occupied by its partner Microsoft.
Key points
- Space replaces Library and is available on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans on web and desktop.
- Pages lets teammates, ChatGPT and Dots edit a document together; collaborative slides are due in the coming weeks.
- @ChatGPT works in Slack and Microsoft Teams without each teammate needing a ChatGPT licence.
- Dots use a cloud computer to work across a browser and more than 4,000 supported apps.
Space puts Pages beside a team’s files
Space replaces ChatGPT’s Library with a shared place for a team’s files and documents. It is available on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans through the web and desktop apps, The Next Web reported. On mobile, people can find, read and share pages, with editing planned for a later release.
Pages is the document format at the centre of that workspace. Teammates can edit a page with ChatGPT and Dots, and a page can update itself using information from connected tools. During the Dev Day presentation, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman gave the example of instructing a page to check a team channel and incorporate what it finds, TechCrunch reported. A document could therefore remain connected to the conversation it draws on, rather than requiring its contents to be copied across by hand.
Updating a shared document could involve less copying from a message thread. If a page were connected to that thread and instructed to check it, it could bring information into the document for others to edit.
OpenAI also presented collaborative slides that teammates and agents can edit together. The feature is due in the coming weeks on the same plans, with exports to PowerPoint or Google Slides. That makes Space a more direct entrant into document and presentation software, although the slides remain a forthcoming feature rather than part of the workspace available at launch.
Slack and Teams bring ChatGPT into conversations
OpenAI has also made @ChatGPT available in Slack and Microsoft Teams channels, threads and direct messages. Teammates do not need individual ChatGPT licences to use it. According to OpenAI’s product information as reported by The Next Web, ChatGPT asks for approval before taking action in connected tools. For companies already using those messaging services, the integration offers a way to bring ChatGPT into an existing conversation without moving the exchange into Space.
Business and Enterprise users can form teams in ChatGPT and create Team Tasks. Those tasks can run at a set time or in response to an event, such as a new Slack message. Together with pages that can draw on connected tools, the tasks extend ChatGPT beyond requests typed during a live conversation: work can be triggered by a schedule or by activity elsewhere.
OpenAI said ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users and that more than 35 million people build with Work and Codex each week. Those are the company’s usage figures, rather than measurements of how many people will use Space or the new messaging integrations.
Dots work through a cloud computer
Dots are OpenAI’s always-on assistants, powered by its GPT-6 Astra model. Each uses a cloud computer with access to a browser and more than 4,000 supported apps, The Verge reported. The arrangement gives a Dot a separate computer on which to carry out a task, rather than requiring the task to run on the person’s own device. Its progress can be watched through that cloud computer.
A Dot can receive a task through a text-style interface and send questions and progress updates while it works. People can also speak with one through ChatGPT on the web, desktop or mobile. Dots can connect to Slack and Microsoft Teams, carrying context from sessions on other apps and devices into those conversations. OpenAI says Dots can learn a person’s preferences over time.
For now, a person can create one Dot, with OpenAI planning to allow several to operate at once. That distinction matters for the company’s examples of work spread across apps: the assistant can continue on a task and report back, but the multiple-Dot arrangement is still a plan.
OpenAI said Dots will not be available to Pro users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK for now, according to The Next Web.
