JERA, Dell Technologies and RHAELM are planning a $15 billion, 400 MW hyperscale AI data centre in Chiba as part of a memorandum of understanding on development in Japan, Finimize reported.

The partners intend to use the memorandum to make AI data centre construction more repeatable. Custom designs, long construction timelines and risks that lenders struggle to price are common in AI data centre construction, Finimize reported.

RHAELM is a UK-based AI infrastructure developer. The Chiba site is the starting point for the partners’ plan to standardise construction in Japan, according to Finimize.

Nippon Life Insurance allocated 2 trillion yen to US data centre financing, while Panasonic Energy is targeting $5.5 billion in data centre battery sales, AI Affairs previously reported.

At Chiba, JERA will provide land beside its power station and supply 400 MW under a power agreement lasting 15 to 25 years, Finimize reported.
