Nvidia adds European weather model as AXA studies cyclone risk

StormScope EU forecasts cloud conditions at 10-minute intervals. TotalEnergies is evaluating solar forecasts at two photovoltaic sites, while Vaisala Xweather is adapting the models for its platforms.

Nvidia said in its company blog on 21 October that StormScope EU had joined its Earth-2 family of open weather models, forecasting cloud conditions across 16 Meteosat channels at 10-minute intervals. At GTC Berlin, Nvidia demonstrated the regional model in a live weather pipeline built with Earthmover, with results updated when new satellite observations arrive.

AXA is using another Earth-2 model, FourCastNet 3, to study regional cyclone risk across more than 1,000 simulated seasons, Nvidia said. TotalEnergies is evaluating StormScope-based solar-radiation forecasts at two photovoltaic sites. Vaisala Xweather is combining Earth-2 with its own observations and lightning data for weather intelligence platforms serving energy, transport, maritime, insurance and government customers, according to Nvidia.

Nvidia said University of Manchester researchers trained an adaptation of its CorrDiff model for UK air-quality modelling on the Isambard-AI supercomputer and ran it locally on DGX Spark systems. Space42 developed SARDiff4Height using CorrDiff and Nvidia PhysicsNeMo to estimate surface heights from a single radar image and produce uncertainty maps, the company said.
