OpenAI announced on 21 October that it will expand ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, taking the service to 89 worldwide, CNBC reported. Free users and Go subscribers in Argentina, Peru, Nigeria, South Africa and Ukraine are among those who will begin seeing ads. The expansion follows an earlier rollout to seven markets in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.

OpenAI began testing ads in the United States in February. Its advertising business reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in August, up from $100 million in March, CNBC previously reported. OpenAI says the ads are labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s answers, which they do not influence.

Anthropic has made its rival Claude’s ad-free position a point of competition, pledging to keep the chatbot free of ads and featuring OpenAI’s advertising push in its first Super Bowl campaign. OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on ChatGPT.
