Tencent signs Oracle lease for about 100,000 AI chips, FT reports

The Financial Times described the agreement as Tencent’s largest overseas lease. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report.

Tencent signed its largest overseas lease deal with Oracle for access to about 100,000 advanced AI chips, the Financial Times reported on 30 September in a Reuters dispatch citing people familiar with the matter.

Oracle lease covers chips unavailable in China

The Financial Times described the arrangement as Tencent’s largest overseas lease deal. The chips were not available in China, it reported. Oracle, the counterparty named in the report, is a US cloud provider.

Tencent’s cloud business and AI products

Tencent’s company profile lists cloud services within its FinTech and business services segment, alongside commercial payments and other financial technology activities, according to MarketScreener. The profile describes Tencent as operating across four segments: value-added services, online advertising, FinTech and business services, and other activities.

The value-added services segment includes online games, paid video memberships, live broadcasts and social networking services. MarketScreener’s profile places media and social advertising in the online advertising segment. It lists film and television production and distribution, copyright licensing and merchandise sales among the company’s other activities.

Tencent Cloud has also launched DataBuddy, an enterprise data and AI workbench, AI Affairs reported. Separately, Tencent said its Hy Image 3.5 model matched a ByteDance model in Tencent’s internal tests, according to AI Affairs.

Oracle’s AI agents and Tencent’s November earnings

Oracle has put database controls beneath AI agents to govern their access to data, AI Affairs reported. That database initiative and the chip lease concern different parts of Oracle’s AI-related offerings.

Tencent is scheduled to release third-quarter 2026 earnings on 18 November, according to MarketScreener’s company calendar.
