Former US vice president Kamala Harris urged governments and technology companies to put AI safeguards in place during an appearance at South Korea’s Asan Institute for Policy Studies on 14 October, Reuters reported. “My concern is that the window is shutting,” she said.
Harris described cybersecurity threats, AI-enabled weapons and systems escaping human control as three existential dangers requiring immediate action by governments and companies. She said AI developers “have to be at the table” if safeguards are to be established.
Her call for US-China engagement on international AI rules comes after President Xi called for cooperation to keep AI under human control and President Trump rejected an international agreement to manage AI risks. Harris said strategic rivalry should not prevent the two countries from working together on shared risks. She called for “healthy and robust competition, but not conflict”.
