India’s cybercrime agency warns banks and lenders about AI-assisted attacks

The advisory describes financially motivated attacks involving AI agents and follows a separate warning issued days earlier by India’s central bank.

The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre issued an advisory to financial firms, including banks and non-bank lenders, about cyberattacks involving AI agents. The advisory was made public on 4 November 2026, Reuters reported from Bengaluru.

Key points

  • The cybercrime centre’s advisory addresses banks, non-bank lenders and other financial firms.
  • The centre describes financially motivated attacks aided by AI agents.
  • India’s central bank issued a similar warning days earlier.

AI agents in the cybercrime centre’s warning

The centre described attacks aimed at financial gain and said AI agents were helping attackers compromise systems at what it called “machine speed”. Reuters reported those words from the advisory. Its warning is directed at financial firms, rather than at users of AI systems generally.

A separate investigation into attacks in India

In a separate case, Israel Defense reported on 26 October that researchers at Unit 42 had examined an attacker known as BUGSTER who used AI assistants in operations against organisations in India. The reported targets included universities and online education platforms. The researchers identified uses of AI ranging from credential theft to intelligence gathering, and reported the theft of more than 5,200 student records from one university.

India’s central bank warned days earlier

The cybercrime centre’s advisory followed a similar warning from India’s central bank by a matter of days, Reuters reported.
