TSMC considers making 3D DRAM as memory shortage lifts prices

Nvidia has requested the newer memory technology, while constrained DRAM supplies can hold up complete AI systems even when processors are available.

TSMC is considering making advanced memory chips, including 3D DRAM, Finimize reported, citing The Information. The world’s largest contract chipmaker has begun mapping out production plans for the newer type of memory. TSMC is best known for making logic chips designed by companies including Apple and Nvidia.

Nvidia has requested 3D DRAM, according to Finimize. The prospective move follows a memory shortage that has pushed prices higher. Finimize described memory production as a more cyclical part of the semiconductor business than TSMC’s established work in logic chips.

AI Affairs previously reported that Samsung planned to use TSMC’s 3nm process for Nvidia memory chips. It also reported that SK hynix was expanding beyond HBM with memory designs for AI inference.

Even when processors are available, insufficient DRAM can prevent complete AI systems from shipping, Finimize reported.
