OpenAI signs deals with Magnite and PubMatic to sell ChatGPT ad space

The two platforms will auction advertising space left unsold through direct deals. OpenAI’s ad business reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in August.

OpenAI has signed deals with two ad-tech companies, Magnite and PubMatic, to sell unsold ChatGPT advertising space, Crypto Briefing reported on 2 November.

Magnite and PubMatic operate sell-side platforms that auction ad space to advertisers in real time. Their deals cover inventory OpenAI has not sold directly. The financial terms were not disclosed, Crypto Briefing reported.

OpenAI began testing ChatGPT ads among users of its free and Go tiers in the United States in February. Its advertising business was running at approximately $100 million in annualised revenue by March and reached a $1 billion annualised run rate by August. An annualised run rate projects a recent revenue pace across a year rather than measuring revenue already collected over that period.

ChatGPT ads had expanded to 89 countries and attracted more than 100,000 advertisers by 21 October, AI Affairs reported. OpenAI’s premium subscription tiers remain ad-free.
